Easyfisher EFU-1 new developments.

The Easyfisher Electric Fishing control unit is now firmly established as the Electro Fishing unit of choice for the Environment Agency in England also the Welsh Environmental Protection Agency Natural Resources Wales..The Electro Fishing unIt is also finding favour with rivers trusts and angling clubs alike where stock control by the Easyfisher Electro Fishing unit is one of the safest methods of fish capture.. East Anglian Electrical are rightly proud of the Easyfisher Electric Fishing control unit and the contribution to fish welfare that is only now possible using the Easyfisher EFU-1. Because the EFU-1 Electric Fishing control unit is a pulse unit we have always felt that the current output could be increased when using a pulsed output. In fact we believed that if the unit was set at a 50% pulse rate then the output at certain voltages could be doubled and pro-rata for other pulse settings.

This means that higher currents can be attained when using voltages that would not have been possible before. The only limitations will now be the overall power rating of 1600 watts. This will be most useful in higher conductivity rivers and streams also in larger bodies of water. We have at this time only bench tested the Electric Fishing unit but results are very promising and we have been pleasantly surprised that unit has held up equally as well as before modifications, a testament to the original designer Gerald Pye. East Anglian Electrical have always been very careful not to compromise the quality and the reliability of the Easyfisher EFU-1 Electric Fishing unit and will proceed with extreme caution before any upgrades are released, we are quite pleased with the testing so far.

If you are interested in the test results please contact us info@easyfisher.co.uk we would be pleased to send you our findings via E-Mail. We may also require any interested parties to assist with electrofishing field trials.

Natural Resources Wales.

We are pleased to be chosen by Natural resources Wales to continue to supply Electric fishing equipment and carry out repairs for the fishery teams carrying on with their important ecological survey work .

Natural Resources Wales.

Wales’ natural resources – our air, land, water and wildlife – are critical to our quality of life. They provide food, water, energy, timber and materials for construction, which also provide a wide range of opportunities for our economy. Our natural resources are also the foundation for our stunning Welsh landscapes and coast - the backdrop to our recreational activities and to everyday life in Wales.

Finding a balance

There are, however, increasing pressures – both from environmental factors such as climate change, and from social and economic factors. We need to make sure that we find a balance for people, the economy and the environment to ensure the best outcomes for everyone in Wales. We need to do that in ways which are truly sustainable, so that we do not squander the assets that future generations will depend on.

What is the Welsh Government doing?

As a Government we have been considering how best to take forward the management of natural resources here in Wales. This has been the subject of a previous consultation ‘A Living Wales’, which we have now followed with a green paper ‘Sustaining a Living Wales’. In these papers we have set out our aspiration to manage in more joined up ways, to help us make better and more sustainable decisions.

Easyfisher and body piercing.

So what have Easyfisher and Body Piercing in common. Titanium of course. Titanium alloys are used in aircraft (including helicopters), armour plating, naval ships, spacecraft and missiles. Titanium alloys do not fatigue easily, are strong and are resistant to corrosion so they are perfect for use in the above items. Most titanium is converted to titanium oxide. This is the white pigment found in toothpaste, paint, paper and some plastics. Cement and gemstones also contain titanium oxide. Fishing rods and golf clubs are also made stronger through the use of titanium oxide. Heat exchangers in desalination plants (which turn sea water into drinking water) are made from titanium as it is resistant to corrosion in sea water.

Body piercings are generally made out of titanium. Titanium is perfect for this as it is easily coloured and is inert (will not react with other things). Thanks to Want to know it .com

As part of our continuous development we are reacting to the recent anode survey conducted here and on Linked In.

We have commissioned 40 cm titanium alloy anode rings, The anode will also feature a new light touch switch with a redesigned switch mount. Code name RSI buster. Contact us for details and be one of the first to take advantage of the new design.

Easyfisher Anode survey

The recent survey that we conducted on the Electric Fishing group on linked in brought up some very interesting points. We thank all who took part in the survey.

There are some that are quite happy with their anode design. But most thought that improvement was long overdue. To that end we have been very busy and have produced some designs that we will be putting into production.

The following points were raised...

  1. The anodes that have to meet the EA specification have by nature a switch that is by any standard most uncomfortable, it does require a lot of pressure to operate, fine if it is used as a momentary push button but keeping it depressed for any length of time is no fun.
  2. The build quality is robust and does add to the overall weight.
  3. The angle of the "monkey grip".
  4. The position of the switch at the top of the grip causes strain on the thumb and hand and puts the wrist at an unnatural angle. It arches up to accommodate the angle of the grip.
  5. The length of the anode should vary with the stature/height of the operator.
  6. The operating digit should not be the thumb.
  7. The fore- arm should be secure on the arm rest.
  8. The anode should/could be supported by a harness.
  9. Will the customer pay for a better anode?

We at Easyfisher have taken serious note of all the comments raised and have been busy trying hard to address all the above points at a price that is acceptable.

We have details of our new designs which will address the above points here .

  1. To address the switch problem we are at this time testing a new switch on an anode currently in use by a fisheries team the early feedback from the operator is very encouraging " It is the best switch that we have had it is so good I would like sleep with it" his words not mine. We are testing it for resistance and continuity soon to see if it stands up to even the EAs rigorous safety standards. This switch will now be used on all Easyfisher anodes regardless of the authority using the anode and will work on all control units. (Specify at time of order. )

  2. To this end we are researching various fibre glass blanks and are meeting with suppliers to find a perfect weight that will be light and robust. There has been a tendency to use greater diameter anode rings for more effective Electric Fishing this has meant that rings have to have a heavier grade of steel to stay circular. We have re-designed the end ring connection and are recommending to our customers that our titanium rings are used. This will go a long way in reducing weight and therefore arm strain.

  3. and 4. Perhaps the most controversial of all points raised on the ergonomics of the anode is how it is held. We have completely redesigned the anode handle so that the switch is operated by the finger and the thumb falls naturally into a small indentation giving a "shake hand" grip. This grip will allow the wrist to rest flat on the anode thus reducing strain on the wrist. The anode will be ambidextrous.

  4. Anodes can be ordered in any length.

  5. The thumb on the switch causes actual pain with some operators ...No apologies for mentioning again that we have moved the switch.

  6. The design of our new prototype will l address this with a redesigned forearm rest and non slip material.

  7. The new Easyfisher Anode will be able to accommodate a harness.

  8. The new Easyfisher Anode will be very competitively priced and will still be excellent value for money and will be a quality product.

After seeing and handling the prototype Easyfisher Anode one of our customers placed an immediate order, so if you are contemplating buying a new set of anodes why not wait a short time and "shake hands" with Easyfisher Anodes" and buy the best available.

Development of Products

Probably the most contentious issue with Electric Fishing Equipment is the design of electric fishing anodes. We are constantly looking to improve the comfort for the user to avoid stress on the hand and arms. We are trialling a new push button switch at the time of writing, which requires a lot less pressure to operate. This will take a lot of pressure off the operator's thumb and we believe will go a long way to relieving stress to the hand.

After a request from a customer we are also looking into adding a detachable shoulder strap which will take some of the weight from the arm which will also contribute to comfort.

When we developed the Easyfisher Electric Fishing control unit we asked potential customers for advice on what they considered were the most important requirements in an Electric Fishing unit. The response was very positive and some of the requirements were able to be incorporated into the design which helped make the Easyfisher unit so successful.

The same applies to the anode we are aware that there is some way to go to the perfect anode and that opinions will vary between users, we would value any input that users could give and if possible incorporate these ideas into a design.

Reel anodes new development.

Following the testing of various cables for use with electric fishing reel anodes Easyfisher are to introduce a 70 Mtr cable length to our popular reel anode range. The use of high quality low overall diameter cable means that the cable reel on our anodes will be able to accommodate the long cable length. The use of this type of anode will be invaluable where longer lengths of river are to be surveyed especially where there are limitations when using a backpack. The extra power from the Easyfisher generator based bank side unit can be better utilised.

Maintenance of equipment and Tornado Jets

One of the things that I am constantly being asked about by users of Easyfisher electric fishing equipment is the maintenance requirements. The Environment Agency insist on a three monthly test on all electric fishing gear, they have long experience of electric fishing and a responsibility for their employee's safety. This contrasts sharply with other users who check their gear annually. It goes without saying that the test is only as good as the instant it is checked. Any test failures must have failed between the last test and the present time, so theoretically the user was using failed equipment. The EA set high standards for the testing of electric fishing equipment so even if their gear goes past a point where it would fail it is still usually safe to use. The highest failure rate is with electric fishing anodes, which do suffer from the rigours of electric fishing. Water ingress into the switches being the main problem in our opinion. One of the things that can be done to reduce the down time from faulty anodes is to only use anodes built to a high standard. We at Easyfisher do not compromise on the quality of the components used in our equipment, our current anode push button switch is used by the MOD for the Tornado jet fighter, believe it or not we are currently trying to improve on that ! Another maintenance tip is to replace the rubber boots on the push button switches on the anodes. By preventing water and dirt getting in the life of the switch is greatly improved. Rubber boots may be found in our shop.

Intellysis Appeal

Obsolete technology. Careful what you do with your old kit. We recently made an appeal for unused electric fishing equipment to enable us to repair some perfectly good control units which were made originally by a company that now no longer supports them. The response to our appeal was quite positive and will enable us to carry on making repairs to the equipment in question.

So think twice before you dispose of your old kit, you may have someone else's spare parts.

Intellysis repairs appeal

We have for some years repaired Intellysis Bankside generator based and Battery back pack electric fishing control units. We are finding that some of the components in these units are now becoming obsolete and we are unable to obtain them, we would like to keep these units in operation as we are sure they are still well used in some areas.

We do have a plan.

The success of the plan will depend on whether there are a number of these units that are no longer working but are not required to be repaired. We would accept these units for environmental disposal at a SR2008No23 Waste electrical and electronic equipment authorised treatment facility (ATF).after the removal of parts that are no longer available but are of use. In return we will send back evidence of correct disposal. We feel that this will solve a problem for any fishery teams with unwanted equipment to dispose of whilst extending the useful life of equipment that is still in use. We will accept any Intellysis Bankside or Backpack units. All you have to do is send us any scrap units we will do the rest and provide evidence of disposal of the remaining parts.

If you can help we would be pleased to hear from you.

We can offer disposal of any waste electronic electrical equipment as a service to our customers but would make a small charge if it is not as above.

We are a weee registered company and undertake to dispose of any equipment responsibly.

Our WEEE registration no. is WEE/EC3271RQ

The long awaited Easyfisher anode is here

After a lot of research and consultation with fishery teams across the UK who use reel type anodes with the Easyfisher electric fishing control unit, we have developed a new anode. The anode features an armrest that can accommodate any length of forearm, something that that is considered very important by a fishery team leader consulted in Wales. The new design grip on our electric fishing anodes has been designed for greater comfort and will present the switch directly beneath the thumb of the operator. The unit is well balanced and will sit at a natural angle when used with most anode rings.

Feed back from users has told us that re-reeling 60 meters of cable onto a small cable drum can be a chore because of the spare tails to the plugs which can hamper reeling so we have introduced a tail storage system to our anode reels. The cable we have left on the plug tails is a generous length and it can be stored inside the reel whilst reeling leaving the reeling handle free from any interference from the plug cable. We have trialled this method and have found it to be a step forward. The cable is easily withdrawn when required to plug into the Easyfisher electric fishing control unit. The cable reels used for our Easyfisher anodes are the industry standard Marcaddy cable reels with non-metallic frames. We recommend non- metallic frames for electric fishing anode reels.

The tapered anode blank is from Hardy composites in the UK and is a high quality glass fibre blank ensuring electrical safety and durability. The anode cable is a high quality five core flexible which is a very similar specification to the cable used on the former Intellysis type anodes. The control wires are tinned and colour coded. The power core is of a heavier grade to deliver the power to the anode ring. We have commissioned a company to make this cable to our specification and we believe that the cable is unequalled in conductivity and outer sheath performance. In fact the resistance of this cable from anode tip to the power plug on a 60 meter reel is less than 1 ohm. Whilst not trying to win any style designs we think that the anode looks the part also in it's striking orange finish.

You can see the anode in the shop.

How do you rescue fish?

How do you rescue fish? Electric Fishing is a good place to start of course. www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-17212119 Have a look at the BBC magazine you may see yourself here who knows?

"We started having to do a few rescues in November and December last year, which is almost unheard of. We are expecting to do a lot more over the next few months and over the summer."

Only approved operators can use the equipment, which is described as very "fish-friendly". There are few mortalities, says David Rogers, professor of freshwater biology at the University of Derby.

"The fish recover quite quickly. It's like us going in for an operation and being anaesthetised and coming round afterwards, you feel a bit groggy."

Thanks to the BBC and David Rogers.

Easyfisher EFU-1 Electric Fishing Control Unit

The Easyfisher EFU-1 Electric Fishing Control Unit was designed completely in-house by East Anglian Electrical Services. Design of the unit was undertaken from the outset in close collaboration with senior members of the Environment Agency's fisheries department, who issued a list of requirements that the unit had to meet. Chief amongst these was vastly improved reliability and longevity compared to units that had been supplied to the fisheries teams by other suppliers.

The testing and evaluation of the EFU-1 prototypes was closely supervised by members of the EA staff, including technical staff and the principal electrical engineer. This included the demonstration of various protection mechanisms that had been designed into the unit to prevent its failure in the event of operator error, such as shorting the electrodes together.

After conducting their own tests and examination of the prototypes, EA staff gave their approval of the design. This enabled EAES to finalise production details of the unit, such as gaining CE certification from an accredited test house. Production of the EFU-1 commenced in the autumn of 2010. To date, over 30 sets of equipment have been delivered to the EA's fisheries teams.

The Easyfisher EFU-1 Electric Fishing Control Unit has been specifically designed to meet the Best Practice Guidance for Fish Capture by Electric Fishing to achieve the optimum combinations for efficient fish capture and fish welfare under the range of environmental conditions encountered by fisheries staff. Feedback received from end users indicates that the equipment is proving reliable in operation. We are confident that the unit will perform reliably and warrant the unit for a conditional 3 years.

The Easyfisher EFU-1 electric fishing control unit has been designed to be as user-friendly and intuitive in operation as possible, whilst maintaining high levels of reliability and operator safety .A monitoring and control system using twin microprocessors continuously checks the operation of the unit and inhibits all fishing outputs if any abnormality is detected. A fault reporting system alerts the operator to any faults detected by the monitoring system.

Up to ten different fishing profiles may be programmed into the unit. Each fishing profile has voltage, frequency and duty-cycle parameters associated with it. Once a profile has been programmed and stored, the settings of its parameters are retained in memory until reprogrammed. Any profile may then be easily and speedily recalled for use. A large illuminated display panel mounted centrally on the unit's front panel provides a comprehensive indication of the unit's current status, including output settings and output current. The output current indication is presented both graphically by means of a bargraph display and also numerically. This aids readability at a distance.

The unit is programmed by a series of simple steps using four large push-buttons, which have been chosen to provide good tactile feedback and to allow easy operation, even by a gloved finger. Three daylight-viewable LED indicators also provide at-a-glance indications of basic unit status and an audible alarm provides additional useful feedback of the unit's operation and draws the operator's attention to any problems which the monitoring system has detected.

Honda Inverter Generators

Easyfisher have identified the Honda inverter Generator range as suited for most electric fishing applications. We have found that these machines are very reliable and do withstand the rigours that use in the arduous conditions that electric fishing can impose. The machines are based on inverter technology which is very compatible with the Easyfisher electric fishing control unit in fact we do recommend using an inverter generator with our units to ensure faultless operation. The Honda units are very lightweight for their capacity a consideration that is important when assessing risk. Also a consideration when accessing steep river banks. The generators are fuel efficient the EU20i will run on a tank of petrol for over 10 hours at the rated load according to the manufacturers therefore eliminating the need for fuel cans. Easyfisher carry out conversion of these machines for electric fishing use and feature a double pole emergency stop button mounted flush thus limiting accidental damage, internal contactor and blanking panel to cover all apertures remaining after removal of unwanted features, leaving the essential controls and engine management devices accessible to the operator. The generators are converted to the specifications required by the Environment Agency. The units are shipped with all fluids drained and the unit is supplied with a sealed can of Honda oil for filling the sump.No need to worry about running the machine without oil as these units will not start unless there is oil in the sump.

The Easyfisher Cathode system

Easyfisher have taken a whole life approach to cathodes producing the Easyfisher cathode system. The system comprises of the usual cable and plug for connection to the control unit but has eliminated the need for a permanently connected cathode tail. The Easyfisher cathode tails can be changed or replaced by competent persons thus eliminating the need for cathodes to be sent for repair when tails are worn out.The system uses an ecological and sustainable method of attachment which is solder free during construction and during servicing. In fact any combination of Easyfisher tails, rods or plates can be attached making this system an economical alternative to permanently fixed cathode systems. The combination of ease of attachment and the use of non solder fittings reduce the down time of equipment and the need for transportation for repairs. The cathode tails are attached using a 10mm stainless steel captive nylon set screw to a predetermined torque setting. A pre-set torque wrench is available from us and is essential for correct fitting.
